St George’s English School, (St Georges International School), founded in 1958 as a day school, mostly for families working for the UN, some from Embassies, Cinecitta – the film studio - and from local families keen to have their children educated in English. Among 80 different nationalities was a Getty boy.

NEXT 12th November Richard Henderson of Historica Tours will tell us about the Grand Tour and Rome in the 18^th Century.

The rich and aristocratic young gentlemen from Britain and other North European countries headed south with their tutors for education, hedonism and to load up with the art of ancient and modern Rome for their mansions. They found a museum city, a  well established art (and fakes) market as well as brothels and other delights.

Richard Henderson runs Italian tours on artistic themes

Historica have been running tours to Italy  on artistic  themes for fourteen years. For Spring  2020 Richard is offering  the following tours to Italy

Ravenna and Venice - Byzantium in the West  

Southern Sicily:  Baroque Splendour in the Hills

Rome:  Gardens and Palaces of the Renaissance

We shall also be running tours to Krakow and a rail tour to Istanbul in the path of the Orient Express.

The visit to Wilton Italianate Chapel and the historic Wilton  House in May was blessed with lovely almost Italian weather. even the trains ran on time.

  

The interior of the church, commissioned by aa Russian Countess of Pembroke in love with Italy  blew our minds and completed the years's programme of events and talks

February's meeting with Gordon Young at Clifton, thanks to C.H.I.S was most enjoyable. We are thinking of asking Gordon possibly to give us all filmshow next year

January's on Murder, Mussolini and Memory with Amy King was a thought provoking insight in darker aspects of Italian 20th Century history much appreciated for members.
