Welcome and what's on in December

We want to let you know about our fantastic monthly programme
Tuesday 13th December at Westbury Fields, Paul Foss will be treating  us to a musical evening on the violinist, singer and composer Maestro Guglielmo Balfi (better known to us in the English speaking world as Michael William Balfe).  He was a fascinating and talented man spending much of his working life in Italy and wrote a great deal of beautiful music much of which is sadly neglected(with musical illustration).
SEE 2016-17 PROGRAMME PAGE FOR DETAILS of January and later celebrated national speakers through to May. If you live near Cheltenham they also have a programme. Bristol University Italian  Department also has an open postgraduate seminar series.. - see Links Page .

Welcome and what's on in NOVEMBER

;We want to let you know about our own fantastic monthly programme
***STOP PRESS*** - Just after our grand Christmas dinner, Lucy Dunkin from the University Italian Department has invited us to an event on 23 November in the afternoon.
If you can make it contact Lucy direct. She writes:
"50 years ago this month Florence was overwhelmed by a severe flood, which claimed lives and also damaged many works of art, books and archives. The flood prompted an international rescue effort, and shaped the field of conservation.
"The University of Bristol History of Art Department and Early Italian Studies research cluster invite you to mark this anniversary with us on Wednesday 23rd November. A screening of Zeffirelli's 1966 documentary 'Florence: Days of Destruction', made to raise awareness of the flood, will be followed by a panel discussion, including Richard Haslam (Venice in Peril) who took part in the rescue efforts as a student. The event will be followed by a reception.
The screening and discussion will take place from 3.00 to 5.30, in Arts Complex Lecture Theatre 2, accessed via 3-5 Woodland Road, Bristol, BS8 1TB. Everyone is welcome! For more information, please email lucy.donkin@bristol.ac.uk."

Thank you- Robert Walters for the sharing the sparkle of Leonardo on Tuesday 8th Nov. SEE 2016-17 PROGRAMME PAGE FOR DETAILS of December and later celebrated national speakers through to May. April's Meeting Casa Cuseni - a House in Sicily

We enjoyed a sparkling presentation from Celia Catchpole, niece of Daphne Phelps the owner of the house 1948-96 and author of the book. Celia was able add new stories to those in the book and to expand and update anecdotes covered in the book. Her illustrated talk led us into the secret would of the amazing Taormina garden and house. With Celia's permission, I hope to publish here more of her text and slides.

  Welcome!  BENVENUTI A TUTTI!
